Looking After Gums For Patients Near Stoneygate

5th November 2013

At Aesthetic Smiles near Stoneygate we actively encourage good oral hygiene and firmly believe that prevention is better than cure, especially when it comes to your gums. Unfortunately, gum disease is all too common, despite the fact that it can be prevented very easily.

What causes gum disease?

Poor oral hygiene is the main cause of gum disease, but there are also other factors, which can increase your risk of developing gum disease, including your diet, smoking and taking certain types of medication; if you are pregnant or you have diabetes, you may also have a higher risk of gum disease.

Poor oral hygiene contributes to the formation of plaque, a sticky white substance, made from bacteria and pieces of food, which clings to your gum line and irritates your gums, causing them to become painful and inflamed.

Symptoms of gum disease

Gum disease gets worse over the course of time, so it’s important to get treatment as soon as possible; this means seeing your dentist when you spot warning signs, such as bleeding when you brush, sore, tender and swollen gums and an unpleasant taste in your mouth.

Looking after your gums

Brushing your teeth will help to remove plaque from your mouth, but good oral hygiene is often not enough to keep your gums healthy. Flossing is important for your gums, as it targets the gum line, which tends to attract plaque and bacteria; you may find that when you floss for the first time your gums bleed; this is very common but if they continue to bleed, see your dentist. The foods you eat play an important role in gum health, so try to avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks and ensure you take in plenty of calcium and vitamin C. Smoking is also a major risk factor for gum disease and if you can give up, this make a massive difference to your oral and overall health; we can offer help and advice for patients who want to try and quit smoking.
